This carbine was invented by South Carolina native Mahlon Gallager, who licensed the design to Richardson and Overman of Philadelphia. 22,728 Gallager carbines were purchased by the Union Army and saw extensive use as a cavalry weapon. CONDITION: Very good overall with 80-85% thinning original blue on the barrel. Traces of case color on the frame, turning mostly a silver patina. Bore is very good and the action tight and crisp. Wood shows moderate to heavy use. -MKS-
