Serial number 1779. Exceptional Volcanic Repeating Arms Navy size pistol with 8 inch blue octagon barrel marked in three lines, "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854". Integral magazine tube with fluted ribs, German silver cone front sight, and dovetail receiver mounted rear sight. Brass receiver with small loop lever and two piece varnish walnut grips. Serial number located on right side of backstrap at the butt, under grips, on inside flat of both grips, right side of lever, and on the rear face of the follower. Assembly number 64 observed on barrel top face under the rotating loading sleeve, and on the rear face of the loading sleeve. Approximately 1,500 8" Navy models were manufactured by Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. from 1855-1857. After 1857 the address became New Haven Arms Company under the leadership of Oliver F. Winchester. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus. Receiver has a beautiful untouched look, turning a much sought after medium mustard color patina. All edges are sharp and crisp, having never been polished or over cleaned. Barrel and magazine tube have 97%+ original bright blue. Most all of the original bright blue on the elevator and bolt. All original unmolested screws. Walnut grips have most the original varnish showing light to moderate wear with only defects being a few small scratches and dents around the butt. Overall a superlative example of the desirable 8" "Navy" model Volcanic that would be most difficult to improve on. -MKS-
