(1926) 28" chopper lump barrels with narrow swamped game rib are engraved "Holland & Holland." and "98 New Bond Street, London." on tops. Gun is "1" of a pair with "1" inlaid in gold at rear portion of rib, on top lever, and forend tip. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 16 gauge, one ounce of shot, and 2 - 1/2" chambers. Barrels are fitted with H&H patent self-opening assist spring mechanism. Case hardened small sized "Royal" sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, detachable sidelocks with lever on left engraved "PATENT", and double triggers. Action is engraved in classic H&H "Royal" style with near full coverage varying sized open shaded scroll with "Holland & Holland" in arched device on each lockplate. Bottom of action is engraved "ROYAL" "SELF-OPENER" "PATENT 1922". On this particular gun, all engraving is exceptionally well executed with acanthus highlights on fences in semi-relief. Single beaded trigger guard has open scroll on bow and serial number on short tang. Straight grip buttstock of very nicely marbled European walnut measures 14 - 3/8" over checkered wood butt. Stock features drop points, point pattern checkering on semi-diamond hand, and a gold oval on toe line engraved "A. C. M". Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in good quality leather case embossed "F. B. M." on top. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth, and a gold embossed black leather H&H label is in lid. Label is marked with Royal crest and "By Special Appointment to His Majesty King George V." (in use between 1911 and 1936). Case contains H&H marked horn handled turnscrew and oil bottle, along with another early pewter oil bottle in space normally reserved for striker bottle. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of an older re-black, somewhat brown in hue. Action retains a considerable amount perhaps as much as 30% original case hardening color, the remainder faded to a pewter gray. Engraving remains sharp and clear. External blue on forend iron cleaned to coin finish for some reason, engraving somewhat softened. Trigger guard reblued, and retains nearly all of that blue, engraving somewhat softened. Stocks retain nearly all of an older oil finish with some subsequent marks, checkering competently re-run. Bores are very fine with some very light frosting, and one or two very minor pings. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are in time. Case leather is fine, still relatively light in color with numerous scrapes and rubs. Handle and straps are good. Interior cloth is very good with some rubs and marks. Label is very fine. Accessories are fine. MGM42.
