According to noted authority Bruce Canfield, "most of the Winchester Model 1897 trench guns manufactured under World War 1 US government contracts were not stamped with martial markings". This is such an example. Its serial number places it within excepted range (E613000-E705000). It has the correct six row heat shield with 1918 patent date stamped on left side. It bears a commercial grade Winchester blue finish. This is proper solid frame example with a 20" barrel stamped "cyl". Barrel and frame have proper WP stamp. Slide bar stamped Model 1897. The walnut stock has thin wrist with non-fluted high comb. Winchester logo black buttplate and sling swivels. No US stamps on gun of any kind. CONDITION: Frame retains nearly 90% of its factory original high polish blue with numerous handling marks. Barrel, tube, and shield retain majority of original blue. Stocks are excellent with light handling marks. Gun has a mirror bright bore. Comes with 1910 dated sling and a M1917 bayonet. DB
