The sofa has a deep serpentine, arched crest with outward scrolled arms on downswept supports. The serpentine seat sits on tapered square legs that terminate in spade feet and joined by square stretchers. It represents a small group that combine Chippendale elements with the later transitional square tapered legs and spade feet. The exaggerated serpentine crest, the outward flare of the scrolled arms and the downward rake of the arm supports all reflect the brilliancy of the earlier Chippendale period. An example of this form is in the collection of Winterthur. CONDITION: The sofa has survived in very good condition. PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, 30 Jan 2006, Sale NO8160, Lot 87. Joe Kindig Antiques.
