Pennsylvania ladder-back armchair, walnut, circa 1760. The four graduated slats with serpentine tops and straight bottoms represent the earliest treatment of this chair form. The turned stiles with finials continue to a rush seat with early sawn and shaped arms over baluster turned arm supports. The turned legs terminate in large ball feet. Boldly turned ring and vase medial stretchers. CONDITION: Later black and red paint and replaced rush seat.
