Lot consists of: three sabers with etched blades. (A) Non-regulation Clauber made saber on the British 1822 pattern. Steel hilt with branch guard, backstrap, wire bound, sharkskin wrapped grip. Wire is central twisted strand with two border strands. Obverse etched with palmette at bottom. Display of arms above with drums, flags, halberd, and American shield. Two long sections of leafy vines above with central, spread-winged American eagle with E Pluribus Unum ribbon. Reverse has W. Clauberg, Solingen and standing knight on ricasso with same series of etched panels but with oval shield in stand of arms and US in place of the eagle positioned between the extended vines panels. Etched "IRON PROOF" on back of blade near guard. Steel scabbard with brass rings and bands. CONDITION: Excellent. Hilt has minor age toning to steel. Grip excellent. Red pad in place under guard. Etching vivid on good frosting. A very few tiny age spots, hardly noticeable on the nice etching. Very good edge and point. Scabbard shows dull silver gray, with darker gray areas and a few brown spots. Medium bright brass ring mounts. Two or three minor dings near drag. (B) Horstmann and Sons, Philadelphia marked British 1821 pattern saber for the American market. Steel hilt with backstrap with checkered thumbrest. Sharkskin wrap with wire binding. Blade has narrow kilij style back edge near point. Wyersberg blade stamp on obverse along with etched Horstmann panel, extended acorn and oakleaf branch, US Shield on panoply of arms, US eagle with shield and ribbon, conical tent with flag, terminating in leafy branch. Obverse etched with similar foliate motifs top and bottom. Central motifs are "C.T." etched in a wreath, Indian with raised tomahawk, eagle with arrows, olive branch, ribbon and stars overhead with sunburst rays. Same saber as First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry and the "C.T." is usually taken to be a shortened form of the title: "City Troop." Comes with early style white saber knot of thin buff leather. CONDITION: Overall very good. Steel hilt has dark sections mixed with gray. Interior of counterguard show some leather adhering indicating there might have been an inner pad. Blade frosting is thin, but etching is strong. Good edge and point. Bright metal. Wire wrap is central coiled strand with plan border strands. One section of the coiled strand is missing and some of the border wire is loose. Scabbard has rubbing to brown between rings showing some gray there and at throat. Otherwise good smooth metal with no dents. Inventory number "40" on small piece of tape at upper ring band. (C) Brass hilted saber with two branches and a flat openwork scrolling inner guard, bird's head pommel, backstrap, black leather grip bound with twisted brass wire. Blade is curved, single edged, etched in panel in the center of the reverse, "Ancient and Honorable Artillery Co. 1638." Sabbard is brown leather with brass upper and middle mounts and drag. Carrying rings on both mounts with stud on the upper mount as well. CONDITION: Very good. Hilt has good tone to brass and no dents. Wire is complete. Grip leather shows wear and finish loss. Blade has good edge and point. Even steel gray in color. Two dark gray areas on obverse and brown at point. Reverse clear etching, minor age spots, but some brown at point also. Scabbard is solid with good color and finish to the leather and nice patina to the brass that matches the hilt. Drag is a bit loose. (SR)
