Lot consists of: one unmarked 1850 pattern Staff and Field Officer's Sword and one nice 1850 Pattern Foot officer sword. (A) Standard configuration 1850 staff and field carried by majors and above and officers on staff duty. CONDITION: Good. Hilt with some traces of gilt, triple wire binding in place. Sharkskin shows gap along seam on underside and an open spot just below the end of the counterguard at the pommel. Pad in place, with lobed border. No maker marks. Blade with good edge and point. Thin frosting to panels, but visible etching. Floral and and display of arms on obverse with American eagle with shield on chest. Reverse foliate, dotted latticework and script foliate "US". Oval etched panel at bottom obverse does not seem to have been etched with retailer address. Brass mounts show about 50% subdued gilt with rubbing to brown. Scabbard body with thin gold paint showing brown at edges of mounts. (B) Regulation 1850 pattern foot officer sword and scabbard. Etched blade marked "Warranted to cut wrought iron Tiffany & Co. New York." CONDITION: Very good. Deep grey sharkskin with good surface, binding wire in place. Hilt bright with dark stains. Red blade pad in place. Blade smooth metal with good edge and point. Scattered grey spots. Obverse etched with floral motifs, arms, US shield, American eagle with shield and scrolling motto ribbon overhead. Reverse etched with arms and US flag, floral motifs, "US." "PDL" blade maker stamp at base of blade. Frosting somewhat thin and grey areas mixed in but readily visible etching. Scabbard very good with good finish to leather, solid, Nicely engraved mounts with floral motifs, US on drag, blank scroll on top mount for a name or presentation. A good pair of swords illustrating the two types carried by regimental field and line officers. SR
