Manufactured 1853. Early small guard 1851 Colt Navy with brass guard and backstrap. Octagon barrel, blade front sight, notched hammer rear sight. Matching numbers including wedge. Varnished walnut grips. With very nice and supple original black leather butt forward military pattern flap holster with no discernible markings. Unusual US marked on flap cartridge box with no markers markings. Package of Colts combustible .36 caliber skins in sealed container with excellent label. Provenance, according to the consignor, is that the pistol and original issue holster belonged to a relative who was an officer with the 1st Maine Cavalry Division, and later assigned to Joshua Chamberlain's staff at Appomattox for the surrender. When he returned to Springvale, ME, at the end of the war the items were wrapped in a period newspaper and left in the attic where they were subsequently recovered.
CONDITION: Very good with gun having traces of blue finish in protected areas and balance turning patina. Grips have had finish added at some earlier period but are full sized and attractive. Holster is alligatored on the exterior but remains supple and cartridge box is supple with good stitching. Package of skins are very fine with sealed corners and excellent vivid label. TDW
