The long octagonal barrel of typical form with orthoptic rear sight, copper front sight. Three panels of foliate engraving on a gilt ground. The barrel tang engraved and gilt en suite. The lock with Silesian external mainspring, filed cock spring. Cock well engraved with a face and flowers. Pan cover engraved en suite. The fruitwood fullstock inlaid throughout its length with dogs, foxes, hounds, in Mother of Pearl, white stag horn, and green stained stag horn, of better quality than usually encountered on these most interesting wheelock guns. The cheekpiece with an armorial reserve in dark stag horn, flanked by two winged angels with green stained horn wings. Patchbox inlaid en suite. CONDITION: Barrel is patinated but retains considerable traces of original gilding with no serious pitting and faint traces of original bluing. Lock is excellent with old dried grease/oil, engraving is sharp and crisp. Pan cover does not remain open, needs minor adjustment. Stock is good with the cheekpiece plaque replaced and other angels replaced/repaired. Patchbox is good, some horn tendrils missing and a few replaced. Steel trigger guard, originally gilt, retains strong traces of original fire gilding. Stock is stamped with museum number 374 by trigger guard finial. The inlay of this tshinke is superior to most examples encountered and with further minor restoration would be one of the better examples of this most interesting wheellock form. Bore is fair with strong rifling. MZ
