Unique hopper fed repeating cannon patent model. Chamber marked "CANNON REPETITION SYSTEME JEROME". No serial number or proofs are evident. Mechanical swing breech mechanism with hopper for gravity feeding of cartridges. .50 caliber centerfire chamber with 11 - 3/4" barrel. All steel construction with sprocket controlled elevation. Spring loaded recoil system with dual trunnions for mounting on wooden display base. Cannon's action is 1" wide steel with the swinging breech measuring 1 - 1/2" wide. Operated by a turning crank, the breech swings left and right feeding cartridges from the hopper into the chamber. Believed to be manufactured for patent purposes in the 1880's time frame. CONDITION: Very fine with a wonderful even patina overall. The breech has been cleaned at an earlier period so one can read the SYSTEME JEROME markings. The action operates smoothly and without any hesitation. The wooden base is very good with most all of its period black painted finish remaining. This Patent Model measures 25" long by 5 - 1/2" high. This is one of the finest examples of a mechanical cannon we have ever seen. TDW
