This gun is dated 1846, which means it certainly could have been issued during the Mexican Wars (April 1846- February 1848). A substantial number of these guns were reissued by both Union and Confederate forces for use in the Civil War. The "Fighting 69th" New York, part of the Irish Brigade, was known to have been issued smoothbore model 1842 muskets. Matching 1846 dates on the barrel and lock. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have been cleaned with areas of light pitting. Markings are clear. Wood has been lightly cleaned with dings and handling marks, there is a slight crack on the left side where the stock meets the barrel tang. Good cartouches on left side. Fine mechanical function. GR
