Late 19th century Stella style 202 orchestral music box with clock marquee. In a beautiful custom mahogany cabinet, with bright nickel accents, and the original celluloid dealers tag for Herman A. Ockel, Providence RI. Herman Ockel was a fine watch and clock maker/dealer and was the local agent for Jacot & Sons Music Boxes from New York who were the U.S agents for Mermod Freres, prolific maker of cylinder music boxes and the maker of the Stella mechanism. Mermod Freres sold the mechanisms to dealers who installed them into cabinets built by others. Though the cabinet maker for this Stella is unknown, it is truly a work of art. Solid mahogany construction with hand carved accents and carved crown molding, and a one piece solid marquee with a Harris & Harrington clock installed. The bottom of the cabinet has storage for additional discs, accessed through a side door. However, the true measurement of the quality of the cabinet construction comes from the tone and sound when it plays. Stella's duplex comb, unlike other music box makers double comb, vibrates the note simultaneously on both combs as opposed to independently. Mounted in this highest of quality cabinet, the tone and sound of this Stella Orchestral Upright Music Box is simply superb. Condition is excellent and was truly cared for over the last 120 years. Some loss or crazing to finish, but nothing distracting from the overall beauty of this machine. Comes with crank and keys and additional discs.
