Manufactured between 1861-1865, approximately 30,000 made. Blue with case hardened breech block. .50 caliber percussion, breech loading. 21 - 1/2" octagon to round barrel. German silver blade front sight and fold down ladder rear barrel sight. Saddle ring with bar on left side of frame. Left side of frame marked in three lines: "MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS." and three lines: "ADDRESS/POULNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE U.S.A." Operated by depressing the brass latch forward of the trigger. Plain straight grain walnut stock and forearm. No U.S. inspection marks or cartouches observed. Among the Union cavalry regiments issued these carbines were the 3rd West Virginia, 7th & 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut, 7th & 17th Pennsylvania, 6th & 9th Ohio, and 1st Massachusetts. CONDITION: Excellent with 90% original blue on barrel beginning to turn brown patina. Case color on breech is a dove grey patina. Wood is fine showing moderate wear. Bore is excellent and bright. -MKS-
