1,000 Robbins & Lawrence made 1841 rifles were purchased by the state of New Hampshire from Massachusetts in 1861, of which 791 were altered to accept a saber bayonet. Many of the altered guns were subsequently issued to the 9th NH. Matching 1849 dates on the lock and barrel tang. "NH" stamped into the left side of the stock in addition to the standard cartouches. The saber bayonet lug was removed from the right side of the barrel, however you can see where it was attached. Proper "U.S. / J.P.C. / P" proofs on the left side of the barrel. The traditional brass blade front sight was removed at some point and replaced with a Drake Alteration style front sight, appears period and contemporary with the removal of the saber bayonet lug. All steel cupped ramrod. CONDITION: Metal is a pleasing grey color with some light discoloration. Markings are clear. Brass has a nice mellow look to it. Wood has some dings and handling marks with good inspectors marks. Fine crisp mechanical function. Bore has strong rifling. GR
