These fairly scarce guns for many years were thought to be Confederate and referred to as "M rifles" due to the "M" stamped within a shield at the rear of the lock plate. Subsequent research has uncovered that these guns were actually produced by Moore in New York, working in conjunction with Colt. Dated 1863 on the lock. Standard British proof marks of "25" on the left side of the barrel. Accompanied by a standard US model 1855 socket bayonet. CONDITION: Gun retains a pleasing patina overall with areas of light rust and pitting. Brass has a nice mellow color. Markings are clear. Wood has some dings and handling marks. Bore is dirty with some rifling. Good mechanical function. Bayonet has a coat of old dried grease on it. GR
