Interesting breech loading, single shot percussion rifle. Typical English style sidelock and hammer. The barrel breeches open from the frame by using a unique fulcrum system which incorporates a loading type lever attached to a pair of straps acting as a hinge. When operated, the barrel rides forward on an arbor that is permanently attached to the frame. No makers mark, serial numbers, or proof marks can be found anywhere on the gun. Only mark found is on the top flat of the barrel which reads: "BENTLEY'S PATENT NO. 536". Small blade front and a three leaf fold down rear barrel sights. Beautiful faux Damascus pattern on the fluid steel octagon barrel. Slow twist rifled .45 caliber bore. Delicate English style scroll engraving on the lock, frame, and hammer. Full figured checkered English walnut stock. Steel buttplate with long tang at the heel. Rifle is fitted in a later period wooden box with tools required for assembly and firing the rifle. Very interesting outfit, possibly a patent model firearm? CONDITION: Excellent with most all the faux applied Damascus pattern on the barrel. All other components are in the "white" and have turned a pleasing gunmetal/grey patina. Bore is excellent, bright and clean. -MKS-
