Model 1860 three band Army rifle. 30" barrel chambered in .52 caliber rimfire. Serial number 4437. Interesting to note that Spencer rifles, serial numbers 4430, 4433, and 4434, are known to have been issued to the 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. Blade front sight that doubles as a lug for a socket type bayonet. Folding ladder rear barrel sight graduated to 800 yards. Blue with case hardened frame, barrel bands, forearm tip, and buttplate. Marked in three lines on top flat. "SPENCER REPEATING - / RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS. / PAT'D MARCH 6 1860". Plain straight grain walnut stock and forearm. The Spencer factory in Boston Mass. produced 11,471 for the Federal Ordnance Department between 1863-1864. CONDITION: Excellent overall with approximately 95% original blue turning a soft brown patina on the barrel.Strong traces of case color on frame, turning to patina overall. Strong case color on barrel bands. Buttplate showing 95% bright case color. Stock and forearm are excellent showing very little wear. Sub-inspection mark "M" on bottom of forearm at the frame. Bore is bright with minimum abrasion. -MKS-
