Manufactured only in 1943. Union Switch and Signal located in Swissvale, PA produced a very limited 50,000 pistol contract for the US Government during the World War II conflict. The company was based in western PA and had previously manufactured railroad equipment and airplane engines prior to World War II. Finished in a Du-Lite finish the left side of the slide is marked USS intertwined, "U.S. & S. CO. SWISSVALE PA. U.S.A." in two lines. The top of the slide is "P" proofed forward of the sight. The left side of the frame is inspected RCD in a circle (R C Downie) with a "P" proof above magazine release. Right side of frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY No 1072347 M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY". Grips are brown plastic Keyes grips with reinforcement ribs. Barrel is marked "HS" on right trunnion with "P" mark on left trunnion. Hammer is flat 1911A1 checkered pattern and trigger is short stamped 1911A1 pattern, arched checkered mainspring housing. CONDITION: Exceptionally fine with most all finish remaining. Very slight edge wear at edges. Bore is excellent bright and shiny with sharp rifling. Grips are very fine. Action operates properly. Magazine is blue finished with "R" on upper lip. TDW
