This fine rifle has a total of 25 German silver inlays. The rifled octagonal barrel is stamped near the breech "N. SHENNEFELT/ CLARION, PA". There are front sights mounted on the top flat. The flat lock is decorated with stamped designs and a large "H" in the center with an arrow through it as the crossbar. The brass furniture includes a two piece patchbox with oval shaped lid engraved with detailed borders. The rifle has double set triggers and a target style trigger guard with two spurs. The flat sideplate is engraved with designs around the edges. There is a small inlaid and engraved brass wear plate on the bottom of the forearm. There are four silver inlays on each side of the forend, and all are engraved with rocker panel borders. There are also inlays on each side in front of and behind the lock and sideplate cavities. There are hearts on each side of the wrist and on the left side there are a series of inlays surrounding and on the relief cheek piece. Towards the back of the buttstock there are four tear drop shaped inlays forming a flower. On each side of the front tang of the trigger guard there are silver half moons inlaid. Full length figured maple stock retaining much of its dark original finish in protected areas. Complete with a later ramrod. CONDITION: Rifle has probably been shortened by a couple of inches during its period of use. About five of the silver inlays have been replaced. The barrel retains a grey surface with some wear to markings, although they are still clear. Lock does not hold on cock or half cock and retains a slightly pitted grey surface. Brass retains a mellowing mustard patina. Silver inlays are mostly lightly patinated. Stock shows some cracks at toe and scattered marks from use. There is a brass repair between the barrel tang and the lockplate, as well as a period filled repair just above the lock tang. A very nice western Pennsylvania rifle. DMG
