John Charles Maggs was best known for his coaching scenes. He painted a series of famous coaching inns, and also a series of 80 metropolitan inns, in which he exploited the picturesque and historical aspect of his subject. Here he has depicted a coach passing the Saracen's Head Inn in London with a group of citizens visiting outside. As in all of his coaching scenes, here Maggs has captured the movement and traveling conditions of the day. The Inn, on Aldgate High Street was demolished in 1868. It stood on a street that lead to one of the eight gates of the city and was an important traveling route in and out of the city of London. Not examined out of frame. Label on reverse: Newhouse Galleries, New York.
