A sketch of a mother and child framed by a window and landscape. A Philadelphia native, she studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she was taught by William Merritt Chase. There she won several awards and a scholarship which she used to travel abroad. She settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts and also maintained a studio in New York and taught at Chase's New York School of Art. Walter is known for her use of color and her intimate portrayals of small children. Oil painting of a vase of flowers on reverse. Martha Walter's estate was represented in the late 1950's by David David Gallery in Philadelphia.
