Born in Connecticut, Sawyer began his career as an artist in New York City. There he found a patron in Henry C. Bowen, a dry goods merchant and a Connecticut native. Although Sawyer exhibited at the National Academy of Design, his real success began after he returned to Connecticut. He enjoyed a prolific and varied career painting portraits of prominent citizens and painting scenes from nature. The subject, Nicholas Nolan was a captain of the Buffalo Soldiers (24th Regiment). After the Civil War until his death Nolan served on the western frontier and helped explore vast areas of unchartered territory from Texas to Arizona. The sitter holds his sword and stands in front of a marble column with his arm resting on a table. Original gilded frame. Small patch on back - 2" x 2".
