An unframed impressionist painting of a vase of poppies on a blue background, attributed to Martha Walter (1875-1976). A Philadelphia native, she studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she was taught by William Merritt Chase. There she won several awards and a scholarship which she used to travel abroad and began a lifetime of interest in travel. She settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. She also had a studio in New York and taught at Chase's New York School of Art. Walter is known for her use of color and her intimate portrayals of small children. Martha Walter's estate was represented in the late 1950's by David David Gallery in Philadelphia. CONDITION: Minor losses at edges.
