Portraitist Wilford Conrow studied at the Academie Julian in Paris under Laurens, Morisset, and P. Tudor-Hart. World War I interrupted his progress, and after attending training camp at Plattsburg, he was commissioned in the Engineer Corps of the Army. After the War, Conrow became a portraitist commissioned by business, intellectual and society leaders. This example is of Ethel Cutler Freeman (1886 - 1972) an anthropologist who specialized in the Seminole Indians of Florida and an esteemed writer and lecturer on the subject. In 1937, the year of this portrait, she became an associate anthropologist of the American Museum of Natural History.
