Attributed to Frederick Pansing (1822 - 1912). Oil on canvas, circa 1890. Fred Pansing, was born in Germany in 1844. After five years as a sailor, where he spent his spare time drawing sailing vessels, he came to New York City in 1865, hoping to make a life as an artist. After some time, Pansing found employment painting ships and making detailed, colorful prints of ships for the American Lithographic Company. The White Squadron was a transitional unit in the United States Navy during the late 19th century. The squadron was composed of the protected cruisers USS Atlanta, USS Boston, USS Chicago, and dispatch boats USS Dolphin and USS Yorktown. They were the first group of modern American vessels to be completed after the naval decay of the Civil War. Soon after it assembled, the White Squadron made its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe as an emissary from the new naval power. Relined. Inpainting in sky.
