The Mountain Meadow Massacre was a series of attacks on the Baker-Fancher emigrant wagon train at Mountain Meadows in southern Utah. The attacks occurred in 1857 resulting in the slaughter of the emigrant party by a Utah militia composed of Mormon settlers and members of the Paiute tribe. The five day siege left all of the members of the wagon train dead except seventeen children - all younger than seven years old. The intention was to leave no witnesses. Historians attribute the attack to a hysteria about the possible invasion of the Mormon territory and hyperbolic Mormon teachings against outsiders. Charles Hopps came to the U.S. in 1826 and first settled in Boston but was a resident of San Francisco by 1851. There he worked as a house, sign, and decorative painter and later operated an art supply and frame shop. Hopps has captured the drama of the event with the many characters all engaged in different scenes within the larger painting. Inpainting at lower right corner and scattered areas of sky.
