Julian Scott served as a Union Army drummer during the Civil War, where he received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Lee's Mills. Scott was injured early in the Civil War, took up painting, and began studying at the National Academy of Design. Scott returned to the war in the spring of 1864, but this time solely as an artist. He was named an honorary aide-de-camp to Gen. William F. Smith in Gen. Benjamin Butler's "Army of the James" near Richmond. After the War, he continued to paint battlefield scenes and other paintings of a military nature. Minor inpainting in background.
