Circa 1976 with London proofs in '75. A very rare matched set. This is a set of four 12 bore sidelock ejector side by side game guns with consecutive serial numbers which all have 28" chopper lump blacked steel barrels with smooth concave tapered game ribs and round steel bead front sights. Ribs read "J. PURDEY & SONS. AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET . LONDON. ENGLAND.". Barrels are numbered on rib at breech in gold 1, 2, 3, and 4; all have 2 - 3/4 inch chambers. Chokes: (1/A) L .010 - IC, R .006 - Skeet (2/B) L: .010 - IC, R: .006 - Skeet (3/C) L: .018 - Modified R: .005 - Skeet (4/D) L: .018 - Modified R: .006 - Skeet. Bottom on all sets of barrels have their individual serial numbers, loop (tube) numbers, "A.H” is also stamped on bottom of the barrels. All sets of barrel flats are stamped with the appropriate London proof marks, nitro proof, chamber size 2 - 3/4”, gauge 12 in diamond and 3 - 1/4 tons. The guns are built on the Patent Beesley stocked to the fences actions with handsome case colors, disc set strikers, bladed tumbler cocking indicators, auto safe (SAFE in gold), double case colored triggers, top levers with gold numbers and Purdey assisted opening. All four guns with nicely figured French walnut stocks, English straight grips, drop points, fine 26 line per inch checkering, gold ovals and checkered butts. Matching splinter forends with Anson push button releases and gold numbered escutcheons compliment these handsome gun stocks. The sidelock actions and hardware are handsomely case colored with full coverage traditional rose and scroll engraving, J. Purdey & Sons name is engraved on the bottom of each lock plate as well as on the action bottom. These four guns are housed in two J. Purdey & Sons motor cases with canvas outer covers, cleaning rods, selvyt cloth, striker key, and J. Purdey & Sons cleaning accessories. As an added benefit for those rainy days this incredible set also comes with an additional set of 4 custom 29" chopper lump steel barrels made by the Spanish maker Armas Garbi and come in their very own travel case. All built with 2 - 3/4 inch chambers and choke dimensions of: (A/1) L: .013 - IC, R:.005 - Skeet (B/2) L: .014 - IC, R:.005 - Skeet, (C/3) L:.026 - IM, R:.012 - IC (D/4) L:.026 - IM, R:.013 - IC. In addition to this there is an extra leather case which holds all four guns. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels: (1/A) 85 percent black remaining with some age and usage wear. (2/B) 90 percent black remaining with some freckling, usage and age wear. Purdey barrel sets A & B are slightly off face. (3/C) 85 percent black remaining with some usage and age wear. (4/D) 90 percent black remaining with some usage and age wear. Purdey C & D barrel sets in good working order. All stocks and forends are in fine shape with some slightly visible handling marks. Additional barrels: 90 percent blue and have some visible signs of age and usage. All sets in good working order. Cases: Makers leather double motor cases are both in very good condition with some slight visible usage marks to the outer canvas covers. The extra barrels travel case is good with visible usage and storage marks. The extra leather case holding all four guns is in very good condition with light handling marks. Very nice and rare set.
