Adopted in 1840 as a shorter version of the Pattern 1839 Line Infantry Musket and remaining in service through the mid-1850s, these muzzleloading smoothbore musketoons were produced based on both the P1839 and later P1842 musket patterns. This is a P1839 style example produced after about 1844 as it is equipped with a Lovell’s Patent bayonet catch. The round smoothbore barrel is blued with British military proofs at the breech as well as a pair of “Opposed Broad Arrows” indicating the gun was sold out of service. The color casehardened lock is marked “(CROWN)/V*R/ENFIELD”. The brass furniture includes a correct New Land Pattern “S” shaped side plate with central wood screw, a buttplate that is marked NV 19 on the tang, trigger guard, buttplate, nosecap, and ramrod pipes. Retains both sling swivels and the full-length button head ramrod which is engraved “19” to match the buttplate. The rack number likely indicates use by Yeomanry or British colonial forces during the gun’s service life. The one-piece smooth walnut stock is pinned, as were the Pattern 1839 muskets, correct for this pattern of carbine. No rear sight as is correct, combination front sight/bayonet lug on top of barrel near muzzle. A very nice example of a pre-Crimean War sergeant’s carbine not often seen for sale in America. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel retains some thinning blue that is fading and shows wear, blending with an evenly oxidized brown patina. Metal is mostly smooth with scattered light surface oxidation and some minor erosion at the muzzle and breech area. Markings in metal remain legible, weaker in wood. Lock cleaned to a silvery gray color with no external case color visible. Lock mechanically functional, smooth bore apparently very good with a heavy coat of Cosmoline obscuring much of the metal. Stock with a moderate number of scattered bumps, dings, mars, and handling marks. Stock solid, full-length, and free of any repairs or serious damage. TP
