Model 1855 Springfield rifle-musket made between 1856 and 1860 at Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts. Seven groove round rifled in-the-white finished barrel with saber bayonet lug, blade front sight and 500 yard rear flip sight. Barrel dated 1857 and marked with "VP" and Eagle head proofs. Maynard Tape priming system percussion lock dated 1857 and marked with Federal Eagle on tape priming door and "US Springfield" in front of door. Full walnut stock with brass nose cap and iron hardware including a 2-piece patchbox and two barrel bands marked with a "U". Stock is spliced under first barrel band. "BM" and "JR" in box proofs on left side of stock behind lock bolts. Comes with tulip head steel ramrod. CONDITION: Rifle stock has been cut down from a three-band Model 1855 rifle-musket to fit a 33" barrel with two barrel bands with the stock spliced at first barrel band. Lock is probable replacement. Overall good with cleaned appearance. Good bore and mechanics. DLM
