Percussion muzzleloading smoothbore cavalry carbine equipped with sling bar and ring and captive swivel ramrod. Round browned barrel with British military proof marks retained with 2 wedges, case hardened lock marked “(Crown) / VR / TOWER 1844” and with (Crown)-(Broad Arrow) British government ownership marks. Fixed notch rear sight, blade front sight. Missing sling swivel in bow of trigger guard. Brass furniture includes pistol-gripped trigger guard, buttplate, nose cap, ramrod pipe and screw escutcheons. Buttplate tang is engraved “A/YC” over “D/22”, indicting use by the Scottish Ayrshire Yeomanry Cavalry, issued to man #22 of D troop. Single piece walnut stock with “(Broad Arrow)/BO” Board of Ordnance marking in obverse butt with additional small inspection marks and maker mark of “T TURNER” along stock toe. CONDITION: Very good. Retains some traces of thinning brown finish which is fading and blending with a mottled and oxidized patina. Metal with some scattered surface crust and minor roughness and some scattered pinpricking. Legible markings on metal, brass with a dull golden patina. Mechanically functional lock. Smooth bore good with scattered surface oxidation and some roughness as well as some lightly scattered pitting. Stock fairly crisp with some light to moderate handling marks, scattered bumps, dings and scuffs. A more obvious scrape is present on the reverse of the butt, along with a hole that suggests a collection tag may have been tacked in place in that location. Wood is very dry and somewhat light in color as a result. Stock remains full length and solid without any repairs. TP
