Southern made smoothbore large caliber percussion pistol made by "J. M. Happold in 1862, Charleston, South Carolina. Browned smoothbore barrel with small iron blade front sight. Barrel marked "Charleston, S.C." and has "Flag and Cannon Breech with pile of Cannon Balls" scene engraved on top of tang. Scroll engraved percussion lock with " J.M. Happold 1862" stamped on lock. Lock held with engraved single bolt and controlled by a single trigger. Walnut stock with checkered grip with iron furniture and silver thumbpiece with illegible letters in script. Comes with hardwood ramrod. PROVENANCE: Comes with letter stating previous sale data and from "Billy Allen" collection. CONDITION: Metal parts turning an aged brown patina with some light surface rust. Lock is missing hammer screw. Wood has dry aged finish with a small chip on left side near muzzle and a hairline crack near muzzle on right. Dark bore with pitting and mechanisms are sticky. DLM
