Contemporary Kentucky style rifle made by Louis Smith from Jonesboro, Tennessee who worked in the late 20th Century and was known for his excellent engraving. Browned Douglass octagon rifled barrel with silver blade front sight and notched fixed rear sight with "Louis Smith" on German silver inlay on barrel. Hand made flint lock with extra percussion lock with touch hole having a bushing so as to be able to screw in a drum and use rifle with percussion lock. Locks controlled by double set triggers. Tight grained beautiful curly maple fullstock with exquisite brass and silver finely engraved furniture including a four piece patchbox with 11 piercings and a mix of finely engraved brass and silver. 19 engraved silver inlays including a toe inlay with 5 piercings, a comb piece with one piercing and a beautiful saddle plate with 3 piercings. Silver engraved sideplate with four piercings. Rifle is also exquisitely raised carved with floral "C" scroll pattern behind cheekpiece and floral raised pattern on wrist and behind tang. Brass triggerguard and buttplate with patchbox release in top of buttplate. Rifle comes with striped hardwood ramrod, brass bullet mold and engraved priming and supply horns with animal images scrimshawed on them. Builder has further put this gun over the top with a hinged two piece curly maple case with purple velvet lining. Louis Smith was well respected and noted for his engraving and classic rifles and is noted in Robert Weil's book "Contemporary Makers of Muzzleloading Firearms". CONDITION: Like new with light handling marks. Accessories are all in fine condition. Perfect bore with good mechanics. A super rifle and a true work of art. DLM
