1879 vintage Winchester 2nd Model 1876 rifle, serial number 8222. Special ordered 26" octagon barrel with full length magazine tube. "Thumbprint" dust cover with screw retained rail. Standard sights. Chambered in .45-75 WCF cartridge. Standard fold down ladder rear sight and German silver blade front sight. Blue barrel and magazine with case hardened frame, lever, hammer, forearm cap, and buttplate. Plain straight grain walnut forearm and stock with rifle style crescent butt. CONDITION: Fine with 90-95% bright original blue on the barrel and tube. Moderate freckling at the muzzle. Bright "peacock" fire blue on the loading gate. 5-10% original blue on dust cap blending with brown patina. Fading case color on hardened parts with traces of strong colors. Bore is bright. Action is tight and crisp. Wood is near excellent, possibly a coat of linseed oil has been added. Wood is sound with scattered moderate dents. Overall an attractive early and scarce standard Model 1876 with case hardened frame. -MKS-
