Percussion Kentucky style rifle attributed by consignor to David Hoff of Emmitsburg, Maryland circa 1840 and very similar to a known signed rifle by same maker. Full octagon rifled barrel with German silver front sight and notched rear sight. Joseph Golcher marked percussion lock controlled by double set trigger. Full curly maple stock with flat barrel keys and nice molding carving. Brass hardware with floral "Q" finial 4 piece patchbox with Maryland style "pinwheel" sideplates. Line engraved with floral pattern on lid. Stock has relief carved "vine" pattern carving with floral design in front of cheekpiece and cross hatch pattern under cheekpiece. Cheekpiece has silver engraved "Man in the Moon" with silver thumbpiece on wrist. Comes with hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has in the white appearance with some slight surface corrosion. Brass has aged golden patina with sharp engraving. Wood has old finish with sharp carving. Small chip with nail repair behind lock near tang. There are several stress cracks running through patchbox and cheekpiece area which seem stable. Dark bore with good mechanics. A fine well-made rifle. DLM
