Flintlock Kentucky style rifle signed on the lock in script "P W" and on the brass backplate in script "PETER WHITE". White started his career in Emmitsburg, Maryland and he later moved to Cumberland Valley in Bedford County, Pennsylvania and finally settled in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania where he died in 1834. This particular rifle was probably made either late in his career in Emmitsburg or early in his Bedford career with the stock architecture being a cross between Bedford and Maryland styles. Rifle has full octagon rifled barrel with German silver front blade sight and rear notch sight. Barrel has been cut back during its period of use, as evidenced by barrel key placement and nosecap position. The rifle has a hand-forged flint lock with line engraving and signed in script "PW" and appears to be original flint controlled by double set triggers. Full curly maple stock with brass hardware including and engraved 4-piece with White's signature "Arrow" engraved on lid. Stock features incised carving behind the cheekpiece and in front of the cheek and patchbox. Well engraved "Hunter's Star" silver inlay on the cheekpiece and silver thumbpiece inlay on the wrist. This rifle is featured on page 384 in "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age: Third Edition". CONDITION: Metal has aged brown patina with light surface pitting. Brass has aged golden patina with some poor fitting from age shrinking. Wood has aged finish with crack on right side where you would carry it. Some slight chips around lock. Dark bore with functioning mechanics. DLM
