Rare and desirable Springfield US M1855 percussion cavalry carbine, dated 1855. With only about 1,000 ever produced, these are highly sought after and are a must have for both cavalry carbine collectors and Springfield collectors. 22" round barrel in .58 caliber with correct 3 groove rifling complete with multi-leaf rear sight and blade front. Captured ramrod is held in place by swivel lug mounted underneath muzzle. Lock is marked with a typically found Springfield armory eagle over "US" ahead of cock with "SPRING" / "FIELD" / "1855" behind cock. Barrel is dated 1855 near breech with VP over eagle proof on left side above wood line. 1 piece plain walnut stock in single barrel band configuration complete with brass nose cap and US marked military carbine buttplate. Iron trigger guard features cavalry saddle ring. Stock bears JS cartouche in rectangle on left side near lock plate. CONDITION: Excellent, and in mostly untouched "as found" condition with light storage and handling marks throughout. Lock is mostly a dark patina and appears to have had the finish touched up at some point. Stock is excellent with very few handling marks with cartouche still legible but fading, especially on edges. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, with 2 crisp stops on half and full cock. Bore has darkness in the rifling with abrasion but visible rifling. Overall a fine example of a rare and desirable cavalry carbine. TON
CORRECTION: Upon further review, the lock appears to be a refinished 1851 cadet musket lock with only 2 tumbler notches instead of the 3 which would be correct. The bore measures .575 rather than .54 caliber. Trigger guard has 3 retaining screws rather than 2. Overall a close example of an extremely rare US martial carbine that would make for a nice display or as an example piece. There is also an expertly repaired crack on both sides of the barrel tang.
