Lot consists of (A) Nice imported Civil War officer’s sword with correct Klingenthal engraving on the spine and French inspection and receiver marks on ricasso, but U.S. motifs etched on the blade, including a block “US” and wonderful American eagle on sunburst background amid martial motifs and floral scrolls. Original black leather scabbard and brass mounts with top mounted rings and angled edges. Comes with a postwar US cavalry saber attachment with snap hooks. CONDITION: Very good. Minor wear to grip. Wire loose but present. Brass cleaned, but matching and will tone down again. Blade with good edge and point. Very visible blade etching. (B) Standard configuration US M1850 foot officer sword with very nice scabbard mounts decorate en suite with the hilt. Upper mount obverse with leafy vine and blank scroll for inscription, stars on ring band. Middle mount with US shield, wreath, sunrays, matching stars on ring band. Drag with geometric and floral motifs, similar stars, sunrays, stippled background, etc. Brass hilt with conventional leaf and floral scroll openwork and US shield on face of pommel cap mirroring middle mount. Sharkskin wrap and wire good. Blade etched “Iron Proof” on spine. Blade with good edge and point, smooth metal, dull silver mixed with gray, a few dark gray spots near the tip, legible subdued etching with US and eagle with EPU ribbon amid arms and floral motifs. CONDITION: Very good. A nicer than usual sword for a line officer serving on foot. SR
