Converted after the close of the Civil War from standard Springfield Armory Model 1863 rifled muskets. It features the standard inspector marked 36-5/8" national armory bright barrel sleeved for .50 centerfire cartridges. Breech block dated 1866 and marked with eagle head proof. 1864 dated lock marked with federal eagle and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". Full length walnut stock with faint script "ESA" cartouche, and iron fixtures including 3-spring retained bands, a 2-piece trigger guard, and a "US" marked butt plate. Rifle is complete with an 1873 style trapdoor cleaning rod, and a "US" marked socket bayonet with a "P. Metzger/Phila" leather scabbard and frog inspected by "H.H. Hartzell". CONDITION: Good/very good. Metal components lightly cleaned to an even, pleasing mellowed bright. Stock has been sanded with cartouche light, and several impressions and dings still visible. Shootable bore with strong rifling and some light pitting. Bayonet good with leather somewhat dry and showing its age. BAS
