Springfield 1884 trap door single shot rifle with bayonet, attributed to Battery C. 5th Cavalry. Made 1890 at Springfield Armory. The right side of the butt stock is marked "BATTERY C./5" four times in a triangle formation. "U.S." marked butt plate. There is an obstructed cartouche on the left left wrist of the stock. Circled "P" proof on the wrist. "V / P / (Eagle head) / P" proofs on the barrel in front of the breech block. "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" marked side plate in front of the United States seal. Standard round rifled barrel with blade front sight and Buffington model rear, adjustable to 1400 yards. Original finish worn to a gray patina in places. Oil finished wood stock with metal butt plate. Original ram rod present. Includes original bayonet marked "US". Metal scabbard and hanger are also included. Bayonet and scabbard are blued. Leather hanger with brass belt attachment. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finish with most areas forming a gray/brown patina. Stock has handling marks, dings and scratches. Bore is frosted with some pits. Good overall rifling. Mechanically fine. Bayonet is good overall with general wear and handling marks. Tip is solid. Leather hanger has wear and crazing. Brass is tarnished. JWA
