Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle. Made 1886. Faint 2 line company address/patent dates on the barrel, in front of the rear sight. "MODEL 1873" marked on the upper tang. "22 Cal" barely visible on the chamber. Bottom of the elevator is marked "22 CAL/SHORT". Octagonal steel barrel with blade front sight and buckhorn style v-notch rear. Rear sight elevation adjustment is a replacement. Full length magazine tube. Original blued finish on the metal components. Factory dust cover present. Wood stock and forearm have been sanded and have a lightly reapplied finish. Crescent metal butt plate. CONDITION: Metal retains little of its original finish with most areas forming a heavy brown patina. Areas of cleaned pitting are present as well. Wood has handling marks and scratches. There hand guard has a repaired crack running through the center. Bore is frosted with a few minor pits. Good overall rifling retained. Mechanically fine. Dust cover slides as it should. JWA
