Beautiful example of an early 20th century U.S. naval trapunto commemorating a sailor's cruise. This embroidered banner was most likely made in Japan as a souvenir for US sailors of the Great White Fleet to commemorate their voyage there. The trapunto banner is constructed of silk floss and metallic thread that is embroidered on a slate blue silk field. The designs reflect both American and Japanese themes, including a screaming eagle perched on an anchor and a US flag with protruding olive branches that are embroidered over 2 traditional dragons which flank a US shield that contains a photograph of the sailor, whom the banner is commemorating. The photograph is clear and focused, and under closer inspection the sailor's hat tally reads "USS GEORGIA". The words "IN REMENBRAWCE OF MY CRUISE / AROUND / THE WORLD 1908" rest overtop of the eagle. Remembrance is misspelled, possibly a translation error. CONDITION: The colors remain strong and vibrant. The thick designs remain intact with no signs of loose threads and pop out of the banner. The frame exhibits wear from handling but remains sturdy. Overall excellent. JLD
