Form is indicative of German or English use, circa 16th/17th centuries. Massive convex blade measures 8 - 5/8 across the still sharp cutting edge. No discernible makers mark is visible on the hand forged head. Round shaft is faceted at head to fit the receiving slot of the head and is a possible replacement. Contrary to popular belief, swords were not frequently used for executions and Anne Boleyn was only executed with such as per her request, with axes much more common. CONDITION: Very good for age, with head an even chocolate patina with appropriate pitting and delamination from age and hand forging, respectively. Haft is very good with much hand rubbing and some splits along grain. Head is somewhat loose on haft, and haft is probably an old replacement. PROVENANCE: Dr. John K. Lattimer. EMW
