Very nice early German halberd that features engraved and punched decorations. The blade measures measures 8" and the beak measures 5" in length. The squared point measures approximately 18 - 1/2". The beak was forged into a reinforced spearpoint. The blade and beak feature engraved open scrollwork with foliate ends as well as a variety of punched decorations. There are very faint traces of gold wire inlay throughout the engraving. The halberd has its original long iron straps with which secure the blade to the shortened approximately 29" haft with 4 hand forged iron nails on each side. The straps exhibit an inventory number which reads "P2". The haft is adorned with decorative tacks and exhibits evidence of a full velvet covering. This halberd was probably very elegant when it was first constructed. The haft appears to be a later replacement. CONDITION: The blade, beak, and point exhibit delamination marks, some of which are more obvious than others. There is also scattered pitting and blemishes. Most of the velvet covering has deteriorated but remains around the tacks. The haft exhibits termite damage but remains sturdy. Overall good. PROVENANCE: Ex-Lattimer Collection. JLD
