Lot consists of 2 items (A) Cased binoculars marked on eye pieces "Negretti & Zambra / Opticians to the Queen" on one eyepiece and "Adjusted in London" on the other. Straight bridge. In business from about 1850, the firm supplied 25 telescopes as well as field glasses with cases to the CS Signal Corps through G.B. Tennent of Courtney and Tennent of Charleston, SC, in 1864. See, English Connection, p. 64. Their products were likely available to Confederate officers and other commercial firms through the same channels. CONDITION: Excellent. Good optics, full leather on body and sunshades. Purple lined case very good. Carrying handle broken off but present. Fastening strap and horseshoe buckle present. Strap replaced. (B) 3 draw telescope with carrying tube. Dealer's card with note on provenance to James Mason family of Blacksburg, Va. CONDITION: Excellent. Nice gray fabric covering to case. Telescope with full leather binding and braided band top and bottom. Lower half of barrel extends as sun shade. Lens cap and eyepiece slide in place.
