Lot consists of 2 items. (A) Mortar shell hook and chains. Iron tongs with hoist ring and chains used to carry heavy shells for loading siege mortars. Unmarked. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) 42 pound mortar shell. White painted find location "Ft McAllister / Savannah, Ga. / 42 lb Mortar." Fuse adapter in place. Built in 1861 for the defense of Savannah, the fort fought off 7 naval attacks during the war and was finally taken by Sherman in December 1864. CONDITION: Excellent. Nice surface and paint. Minor pitting. Fuse plug in place. Appears unfired.
