Scarce Model 1874 pistol cartridge box. These boxes were made from Civil War percussion cap boxes to hold ammunition for the Single Action Army or Schofield Revolvers issued to the U.S. cavalry. The middle of the inner flap was cut out and the ends sewn down to retain a wood block, since removed, bored out to hold 6 metallic .45 caliber cartridges, and the outer flap was embossed with an oval and U.S.. CONDITION: Excellent. Belt loops and tab intact. Only minor scuffs to finish. A very scarce Custer Era cavalry accouterment.
