Springfield US M1847 Sappers & Miners musketoon dated 1847. Total production of the Sapper variation of the M1847 family of musketoons was roughly 1000 produced with only about 800 remaining in service in their original condition and not modified to become Artillery musketoons. The most distinguishing feature of the Sapper musketoon as opposed to the artillery variation is the 2 piece bayonet and locking lug system for the unique M1847 Sapper bayonet, which is modeled after a Roman infantry sword and produced by Ames with a locking ring much like socket bayonets of the time with a cut in the grip for mounting using a saber bayonet lug on the side of the barrel. 26" round barrel in .69 caliber smoothbore with intact 2 piece locking lug system and brass blade front sight on Wickham barrel band. Barrel is marked with "V / P / (Eagle proof)" on left side above woodline. Lock is marked with US armory eagle ahead of cock and "SPRING / FIELD / 1847" behind cock. 1 piece plain walnut stock in 2 barrel band musketoon configuration complete with US marked military buttplate. Stock bears "WAT" (William A. Thornton) cartouche in an oval. CONDITION: Fair, with virtually all of the metal assemblies covered in heavy age related pitting. Ramrod is stuck in place and was not able to be removed for inspection. Stock is good as repaired and refit on barrel and trigger guard. Heavy handling marks and evidence of sanding and refinishing throughout. Action is tight and crisp with two clear notches at full and half cock. Bore is dark with heavy abrasion. A well worn but extremely rare musketoon. TON
