Early Stevens Model 49 with a game scene etched action, 7 o'clock extractor single shot rifle made by the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts circa 1896. Post-World War I Stevens factory installed replacement 28" round barrel serial numbered to the Stevens action with no rear sight seat marked "STEVENS "X" BARREL, CAL 22 -LONG RIFLE" with Lyman style scope blocks. Case hardened "44" takedown etched action with dog and floral scene on left side, rabbit and floral scene on right. Pistol grip double set trigger lower tang, 4-finger loop lever, and Steven Vernier tang sight. Walnut checkered pistol grip Model 49 stock with cheekpiece and Stevens No. 3 large Swiss buttplate. Matching checkered forearm fitted with a very nice vintage Pope-style palm rest. CONDITION: 90% original barrel blue with light edge wear. 40% faded case colors. Wood has 90% original varnish with some light handling and usage marks. Excellent bright bore and mechanics. Description reviewed by Gary Quinlan. DLM/GWQ
